CREATE a space that will encourage your kids to learn . . . We believe that designing the perfect learning space where a child can learn fosters wellbeing and a healthy mind. When designing learning spaces, our aim is to create an organised environment. Free from clutter and distraction, kids will want to use their space and enjoy making it their own.Using the basic building blocks of a kid's desk, chair, lighting, bookcase and a frameless pinboard to pin up all the notices and reminders like a pinboard is all you need to make this happen.Design your own colour scheme around your kid's character and add some personal touches.     TIP #1A kids' DESK is most important for easy learning. Choosing the right sized desk will depend on the size of the space as well as your kid's needs. As laptops have superseded encyclopedia's, the demand for a big desk has decreased. TIP #2A good desk CHAIR is the second piece of furniture vital to both a child's comfort and posture, making it easier to learn. An upholstered seat is a very comfortable option and a gas lift chair is a great investment as it allows the child to adjust their seat as they grow. TIP #3A BOOKCASE is a vital piece to keep the learning space organised as well as have resources easily accesible for kids. The bookcase cavities themselves are not only handy for books, but folders and notes that can easily take up valuable desk space. TIP #1Look for the right desk light to help your kids see the work they are focused on. The best lights are lamps which have the ability to be adjusted and swivel so that the light itself can be focused directly onto the task at hand. TIP #2Use a 60 to 80 watt light bulb for detail oriented tasks. Avoid cool flourescent bulbs that emit harsh lighting that can strain kid's eyes and can cause tiredness. Opt for warm halogen bulbs that are close to natural daylight and place less strain on kid's eyes. TIP #3To find the right bedside light to read by, look for a lamp which emits a diffused light through a shade or one where the light is focused away from the face. Use a warm 40W globe which will emit a subdued light to reduce the stimulation of a bright light. TIP #1One of the best concepts for kid's learning spaces are PIN BOARDS. Hang artwork, awards, reminders and photos to keep the desk clutter free. TIP #2PENCIL POTS are an invaluable way to keep pens and pencils neatly contained and readily accessible. Ina range of colours and sizes to suit your kid's colour theme, it's a little item that can not only beautify the desk, but serve to keep the desk neat and tidy. TIP #3 STORAGE BOXES are a great way to categorise kid's bits and pieces into organised bliss. The idea is to assist kid's desks to be as clutter free as possible to reduce distraction and have everything in its right place. We believe that a pinboard is one of the best concepts for kids interiors, perfect for pinning up artwork or above a kids' desk to pin school events and reminders. Interiors created this amazing shared bedroom for Miss 4 and Miss 7.Read below how she created this gorgeous eye-popping space! About Amy...I’ve always loved textiles and design, prior to interiors I studied and worked in the clothing industry in Melbourne. Returning to my hometown of Brisbane in 2009 compelled me to leave the rag trade and I found myself in a national décor role, developing and selling building products for an acrylic manufacturer. I have been able to hone my skills and assist clients....and achieve spaces they love to live in. At this stage my husband (a builder) and I started renovating and selling our own properties. This process sparked my real interest in interiors and appreciate how important effective lighting, colours, shapes and design is to a space. Through further studies, I have been able to hone my skills and assist clients streamline the design process and achieve spaces they love to live in. What draws you to design spaces for kids? Creativity and imagination can be limitless when designing a kid’s room. I love being able to mix a variety of colours and patterns, tailoring it to each child’s personality and interests. What Amy says about this room... Created for two sweet sisters (Miss 4 and Miss 7) sharing a room for at least the next 12 months. The bedroom already had built in robes and was approximately 3.4 x 4m in size. The clients were after something girly but sophisticated enough to still inspire them into their early teenage years. When designing kids bedrooms what is important to you...Not to be overwhelming. There’s a fine line between injecting playfulness whist not being chaotic. Everyone wants their child to feel safe and ultimately calm when they put them to bed at night. Too much clutter does not promote restfulness for little people, so we always want a space that is soft and relaxing for children. What are the current trends for kid's bedrooms?Happy to say we are seeing less whimsical and pastels. Bunk beds are very popular and a great way to create extra space for a desk or beanbag. Universally kids love seeing their own art or awards on display in their rooms, so pinboards or bookcases continue to be integrated. Is it important to create a space that kid's can grow in?Yes and no. Client’s are realistic with the different stages their children and therefore their rooms will go through. We always like to get some longevity out of larger investment pieces like beds and drawers, however decorative elements will be interchangeable and adapt as their child matures and their interests change. Dreaming of days at the beach? There is nothing more to look forward to than going to the beach with your children. So if you're into the relaxed lifestyle of surfing and swimming, here is some awesome new artwork to adorn your kid's interiors to keep them dreaming about all the joy that coastal living can bring. InspirationThis kids' bedroom look came from the clients passion for water. We choose a colour palette wth cool blue and olive layers interspersed with the warm sandy natural tones of timber to reflect the beachside. We wanted to create a relaxed look so that the room felt like you were on holidays - every day!The Design BriefThis bedroom was designed for a young man who loves water. Playing water polo at school, squad training daily and surfing on the weekend, he's what you would call 'a water baby'. The natural linen duvet is the perfect combination with the charcoal upholstered bed, creating a pleasing contrast. The finishing touch of the Solano striped throw delivered all the colours of the room to complete the look. The fabric choice for the bed Alluvian colour Stovall. Artwork We added the perfect finishing touch to this space with this unique circular print on canvas. This design is printed on premium canvas and finished with a slim synthetic timber-look aluminium frame. Sabrina's room is part of a gorgeous large rural estate with manicured gardens. Her room was in need of an overhaul as her mum wanted her to have a fresh room in time for high school next year. With hues of plum, gold and pink, the gorgeous kids bedroom was transformed into a sugar plum wonder! Before . . .The existing bedroom (see image right and below) had been created for Sabrina, now in year 6 at school, when she was quite young with fuchsia pink bed. The room also had a gorgeous golden toned wallpaper with a deep plum blossom design, white furniture and a swan pendant dropping in one corner. Sabrina's mum instructed us to create a complete overhaul and gave us the direction that everything could go except for the wallpaper and swans. There was also a plum faux rug that Sabrina had purchased for the bed which was an essential to be featured in the finished room. With these clear instructions, we created a design board (see below) so Sabrina and her mum could visualise the new bedroom look for the space before proceeding. After . . .With the  blossom wallpaper and swan pendant light remaining in the room, we worked on designing the space to highlight the deep plum and golden hues of the wallpaper. The bed was a king single bed and both Sabrina and Nici (mum) wanted a new double bed as Sabrina had both grown out of the colour and bed size. Therefore, to transform this room, we replaced the bed, desk and bedside table and introduced more storage - which was essential to cater for Sabrina's collections. With the introduction of deep plum on our Modern Princess Upholstered Bed, Charlie desk with Ned Wall Box, both in white wash, and and handy lockers, Sabrina was over the moon when she saw the transformation.     InspirationWe were inspired by the whimsy and tones of the blossom wallpaper, both with colour and style. Further, being in a rural setting, the home was classically styled therefore both of these elements were key drivers to inspire the finished kids bedroom look.The Design BriefAs Sabrina currently in year 6 with high school just around the corner, her mum wanted to transform her bedroom so that she could grow up through high school and enjoy her own private space. As part of this transformation, both the king single bed and desk were to be changed out to a bigger sizes - going from a king single to a double bed. The bedroom was small but, as a double bed is the same size as a single all of the elements that Sabrina wanted fitted in perfectly to create this dreamy bedroom.Furniture for this bedroom includes the Modern Princess Bed upholstered bedhead (fabric Warwick Lovely col. dusk), double ensemble mattress, Shorty Locker (blush), Charlie Desk Large (white wash), Ned Wall Box XL (white wash) + skinny locker (white) for extra storage. The lunar desk chair was specifically re-upholstered in Warwick Julie col. Rose Stripe) to co-ordinate with the bed head. Decor and bedding for the bed - we placed a Linen Duvet Set (blush), faux plum throw, Linen Sheet Set (white), white valance and a selection of cushions. The desk finishes included white curved rectangle pinboard with Pia Lamp (brass). For the bedside table the Porta Lamp (white) was the perfect size. To hang jackets and hats, white droppit hooks were hung in a row of 3 (see image above).  

Inspiration We were inspired to create this light fresh kids bedroom with the combination of timber, textiles and textures. Layering the textile bedhead with linen bedding, waffle throw, jute floorings and woven basket. Each textured layer serving to be used independently and when combined, creating an inviting space for kids to relax and enjoy. The colour palette was specifically chosen to have soft subdued tones to create a calming environment to reduce stress for busy minds. The timber of choice for the kids bed is the honey toned Tasmanian Oak enriched with bedding and decor in rich toffee highlights and light to mid blues. The Furniture Featuring our latest addition to our furniture collections, the Ripple Oak Bed (Tasmanian Oak|Frost bedhead,) is the hero of the room. Effectively a ripple within a ripple, our latest design reveals repeated soft curves with the use of timber and textile. Here, the sculptured timber legs are met with the softly curved profile within the frame. Juxtaposing straight lines and edges with smooth shaped legs and textured bedhead.We matched the bed with the kids bookcase (Ned 2 Tier in Tasmanian Oak | Western Myall backing). The Ned Bookcase is a 2 tier space saver and works well both a bedside and bookcase and toy gatherer in one. The children's furniture is handcrafted in Australia. We have been assisting parents for over 20 years with products, design and ideas to make kid's rooms the best they can be. Here are our 3 TOP tips around some of the issues that parents need help with the most. TIP 1: TRICK FOR MESSY ROOMSQUESTION #1 "When I walk past my kid's bedrooms they look so messy, so I close the door. How can I set up the rooms so that the mess is not on show?'SOLUTION #1 You need be tactical to create a space where kids can be kids without their play impacting on the presentation of their room. Our TRICK is so simple where you utilise the room's 'BLIND SPOT'. A  blind spot is the wall behind you as you look or walk into the room. Whilst not completely hidden, this wall allows you to put the messy things like a desk, dolls house, lego table or craft table behind your line of sight, leaving the rest of the room to appear impressively tidy! TIP 2: COLOUR TIPSQUESTION#2"How do I choose colours for my kid's room so that it looks cohesive? I am not sure what to do as my child loves so many colours and has a lot of colourful toys?"SOLUTION #2When considering a colour palette for your child our TIP is to ask your child to share their favourite colour. It is then up to you to either get advice or to play around with additional colours by adding a complimentary colour plus a neutral (such a matching tone, grey, black, white, beige, ivory or cream), being 3 colours in total. To do this easily, head to Bunnings or a paint shop as the colour swatches are free and there is so much to choose from. If your child has chosen a bright colour, we suggest that this is featured in the room as an accent colour with cushions and artwork so that it does not dominate the space. If you have other items in the room, which do not coordinate your ideal colour palette, and your child insists on keeping them, place these items in the BLIND SPOT area (see Tip #1). TIP 3: SMALL ROOM TIPSQUESTION #3"My kids have so much clutter and we are further overwhelmed at birthdays and Christmas with  toys etc., do you have any ideas on how I can stay on top of it all because my kid's rooms are small?"SOLUTION #3Traditionally kids rooms are the smallest rooms in a house and easily get out of hand. To get organised, we suggest you compartmentalise the smaller items into baskets and boxes by sorting them into categories such as lego, Sylvanian Families, cars, craft etc. and, where possible, label them. Once sorted, these are perfect for filling up a bookcase, for easy access, so your kids are not pulling everything out to find that one piece. For the larger items, you can either use a toy box (with lid) or baskets so items are are neatly stashed away. Our biggest TIP is to utilise your walls by installing hooks and/or floating bookcases. We believe as a rule that nothing belongs the floor so wall hooks are perfect for bags, jackets, hats, scarves etc. Alternatively, floating bookcases and shelves allow you to get bigger items up off the floor and neatly packed away.
